With the amendments to the Croatian Citizenship Act that entered into force on 1.1.2020 the acquisition of citizenship for the Croatian emigrants, their descendants and their spouses was made much easier. We note that Croatian emigrants are those who emigrated from the territory of the Republic of Croatia before October 8th, 1991 with the intention of living abroad permanently, as well as members of the Croatian people who emigrated from the territory of one of the former states of Yugoslavia which was, at the time of emigration, located in the territory of the Republic of Croatia. These amendments to the Citizenship Act abolished the generational restrictions on the acquisition of Croatian citizenship on this basis, and abolished the obligation to pass an exam on knowledge of the Croatian language and Latin script, Croatian culture and social organization.
